OTTAWA — The third time was a charm. It took three votes for the Ottawa City Commission Wednesday night to approve a budget for next year. The city staff had proposed a budget with an increase of 2.7 mills to build up equipment reserve funds.
Commissioners settled for a budget with a property tax increase of 1.57 mills. The first attempt to cut the increase more was rejected. The second try to increase the budget by more than the compromise but less than the suggested level also failed and the third try came in between the two. Mayor Gene Ramsey said the votes showed how difficult this year was for coming up with a budget.
