BALDWIN CITY- With the new school year just two weeks out, students in the Baldwin City School District have a lot to look forward to in the next year, including the use of the new Performing Arts Center. The center opened just as the school year came to a close in May. The state-of-the-art theatre seats 619 people and not only does it stand as a platform for the arts, but Baldwin City Superintendent Paul Dorathy explained how it also serves as a shelter from storm.
“That facility can handle up to 1800 people as a tornado shelter and can withstand F5 tornado winds,” Dorathy said. “It’s a very safe place to be in a tornado, probably the safest place in Baldwin.”
A large portion of the center was funded by a FEMA grant. Plans for an open house are in the works and a date for it has not yet been determined.
