LAWRENCE — The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services has agreed to a deal with Lawrence and Douglas County to keep the Lawrence SRS office open. To meet budget cuts, the SRS announced closure of nine offices including Lawrence, Lyndon and Garnett. The proposed closure created political firestorm in Lawrence.
The city and county offered to pay nearly a half-million dollars over the next two years to keep the Lawrence office open. SRS secretary Rob Siedlecki said he was glad to receive the offer. “Their proposal will help SRS to meet its cost-cutting objectives, as set by the Legislature, while keeping the Lawrence office open,” he said. “Everyone wins.” Siedlecki said he’s sorry for the disruption the closings have caused. City and county commissioners are scheduled to vote on the funds this week
