LAWRENCE — The Douglas County Sheriff’s office has identified the 30-year-old man who drowned Saturday at Lone Star Lake. The body of James Nicholas Owens, Tonganoxie, was recovered from the lake Saturday afternoon. Witnesses told deputies Owens was swimming with friends about 75 feet off shore at the swimming beach when he went underwater and didn’t come up. Swimmers and bystanders rushed into the water but couldn’t find Owens, Sgt. Steve Lewis said. It’s the second drowning at the lake this summer. A 7-year-old Kansas City boy drowned July 2.
