READING — Lake Region RC&D chairman Don Stottlemire and other officials delivered a truck-load of bicycles to the kids of the tornado-ravaged town of Reading Tuesday. Stottlemire said 11 bicycles will be given to Reading children but the two has requested more for children who are expected to return to the town. Reading has cleaned up the tornado damage and is starting to rebuild but the town probably won’t fully recover because many homeowners didn’t have insurance, he said. The bicycles are part of a series of efforts by communities and people in the region to help the small town recover from the May tornado that killed one man and destroyed most of the town, which is at the west edge of Melvern Lake. Lake Region collects and rebuilds used bicycles from landfills and gives them to poor children, and at the request of Lyon County officials, set some aside for Reading.
