WASHINGTON — The National Endowment for the Arts said it’s stripping more than $1 million in federal art funds from Kansas. Much of the money from previous arts grants had been used by local arts groups to match other grants so arts advocates said the ultimate cost will even greater. Gov. Sam Brownback virtually killed the Kansas Arts Commission by cutting all of its funding earlier this year. In cutting the arts funding, Brownback said a new non-government foundation would raise private funds and that the National Endowment for the Arts would continue its funding to Kansas. But NEA said Brownback’s decision to cut state aid meant national funding would be also be cut.
