OTTAWA – Ottawa will try another Numana “Soup for the Starving” food-packing day next spring. A community meeting will be Thur night at 7 at the First United Methodist Church to explain the details. The goal is to raise $45,000 for the event and pack 150,000 meals for the world’s starving and get donations for local food pantries, which is more than this year’s food-packing event, Carolyn Elder, one of the organizers, said. The response was so enthusiastic that organizers believe, despite the economy, that the food drive can reach the goal, she said. Although the drive is designed for the hungry overseas, the drive also collects canned and non-perishable food, she said.. This year’s event brought mountains of food for Hope House, ECKAN and for the Pomona food pantry, she said. There will be station set up at the church so those who attend the meeting and aren’t familiar with the program can pack some meals, Elder said. The station will be left and the church and used as a demonstration as the food drive progresses, she said.
