WORDEN — A paving project is beginning today on an 11-mile stretch of U.S. 56 from the Douglas-Osage county line east to the U.S. 59 junction in Douglas County. The Kansas Department of Ttransportation said crews will work daily, Monday through Friday with an occasional Saturday during daylight hours. Traffic will be directed through the work zones via flaggers and signage. Drivers turning onto U.S. 56 from other roads, must wait until they are directed by the flaggers. KDOT says drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes. For the $1.2 million project, the contractor will mill off the top two inches of pavement, then apply a new two-inch asphalt layer onto the highway. The project is scheduled to be done in mid-September, weather permitting, KDOT said.
