LAWRENCE — There aren’t many universities that can claim to offer classes in extra-terrestrial life. Kansas University and its classes are taught by an astronaut, in this case, Ottawa native Steve Hawley. KU offers its physics and astronomy student a chance to minor in astrobiology, one of three such programs in the country. Hawley, who has flown on the space shuttle, said the courses deal with extraterrestrial life but he said students shouldn’t expect a course in “ufo-logy.” Astrobiology studies the possibility and detectability of life outside the earth. it also studies the influence of astronomical events, such as solar flares and supernovae, on human life.
