TOPEKA — A study by the Kansas Water Office and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says Perry Lake, Milford Lake and Tuttle Creek generated more than $45.3 million annually for recreation use. Around 80 to 90 percent of the visitors to those lakes are from outside the region, bringing new money into the areas around the reservoirs and boosting the areas’ economies, Kansas Water Office director Tracy Streeter said. The three Kansas reservoirs are also the main sources of water supply for municipal and industrial clients in the region, he said. In all, the state’s reservoir system provides water for two-thirds of Kansans. The water office estimates the value of the three reservoirs water supply at $294 million. The office also estimates that if the three reservoirs were built today, the total costs would be more than $4.7 billion.
