TOPEKA — Like the commercials intone: could earthquake insurance be for you? Commissioner of Insurance Sandy Praeger said that given the recent spate of unexpectedly strong earthquakes in odd places, Kansans might consider adding earthquake coverage to their insurance policies. Most regular homeowners, renters or condominium insurance policies don’t include earthquake coverage, she said. Many homeowners may have to specifically add earthquake insurance. The Kansas Geological Survey says that Kansas has a buried fault line, called the Nemaha Anti-cline, that runs from Omaha to Oklahoma City. You can check with her office on considerations on whether to buy earthquake insurance. Her office website is www.ksinsurance.org. Although Praeger didn’t say, some scientists have connected earthquakes to the new natural-gas recovery efforts called “fracking.” After a series of weird and unusually strong earthquakes, some states including Arkansas and cities such as Pittsburgh, Pa., have banned fracking.
