MILFORD LAKE — Just in time for the Labor Day holiday – Milford Lake, the largest lake in Kansas – is closed. The Kansas Department of Halth and Environment issued a public health warning for the lake because of a dangerous blue-green algae bloom. The KDHE is prohibiting swimming and fishing at the lake. Boating also is prohibited but the state hopes to allow boating by Labor Day depending on the results of lab tests taken this week. The KDHE says there have been several reports of illness and three dogs dying at the lake because of the algae blooms.
