FORT SCOTT – Gov. Sam Brownback announced the next five of the 25 notable Kansans at Fort Scott National Historic Site. As might be expected, black filmmaker, photographer, author, poet and composer Gordon Parks was among the five. Parks hailed from Fort Scott and he shunned the city most of his life for the racism he encountered as a boy. Fort Scott made amends and he visited the city later in this life and took pride in the city’s Gordon Parks Center for Culture and Diversity. Other notable Kansans honored this morning were car manufacturer Walter Chrysler, artist John Steuart Curry, oilman and governor Alfred Landon, and dinosaur-hunter George Sternberg. The notable Kansans program is part of the 150th anniversary events.
