OTTAWA — Perhaps the name of the next labor day traffic crackdown should be changed from “drunk driving. Over the limit. Under arrest.” Try “click it or ticket.”
Ottawa police and Franklin County deputies didn’t catch many drunken drivers during their Labor Day campaign. But they found lots of folks who didn’t buckle up their seat belts. Ottawa police Lt. Adam Weingartner said that during their overtime saturation patrols and a sobriety check lane, officers arrested two drivers for DUI, one driver with drug paraphernalia and four who were driving while their licenses were suspended. They ticketed 61 people for seatbelt citations and two for not using child restraints. Four people were ticketed for speeding and officers made 29 arrests for other violations.
Weingartner said officers checked 434 vehicles during the campaign. Such campaigns are useful in discouraging impaired driving, he said.
