LAWRENCE — A Kansas University professor will talk about Mark Twain’s view of America’s foreign military adventures this week. Susan Harris will talk Thursday afternoon about her book entitled “God’s Arbiters: Americans and the Philippines.” Twain had some sharp views about the U.S. bid following the Spanish-American War to take over the Philippines and make the islands an American colony — and the lengthy guerrilla war it caused, she said. Twain used his wit and writings to skewer American leaders’ attempt to pick up what was then called “The White Man’s Burden.” Twain’s thoughts on religion, race, war and America’s place in the world are still relevant in modern-day debates over America’s global mission in the 21st century, Harris said. The program is free and open to the public. Her talk will be Thursday at 4:15 at Jayhawk Ink on level two of the Kansas Union.
