WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture will ban the sale of beef for human consumption that contains six more strains of e-coli bacteria. Now, the usda bans the sale of beef containing one particular strain of e-coli. The USDA said the ban will fight the increased incidents involving e-coli and protect the safety of the American food supply. The beef-packing industry said the ban isn’t needed and will drive up the cost of hamburger. However, ag secretary Tom Vilsack said the new e-coli strains can cause severe illness and even death especially for young children and the elderly. Testing for the additional strains begins in March.
