THE SUN — Astronomers scrambled to get in some last minute solar research. Two amateur European astronomers spotted a comet racing toward the sun Tuesday. Spaceweather.com reported that when scientists calculated the comet would smash into the sun late Wednesday night, they cranked up their chromatographs. Their conclusion – don’t mess with the sun. When the icy-ball comet plunged into the sun, it vanished; there wasn’t even a fiery belch or burp. The comet was a remnant from a giant comet that broke up centuries ago and Spaceweather said it was one of the largest fragments from the old comet ever seen.
