TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is echoing warnings by the U.S..Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control not to eat cantaloupes marketed as coming from the Rocky Ford region of Colorado. The public health agencies say at-risk people such as older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women; should avoid the melons, which have been linked to a multi-state outbreak of listeriosis. Jensen Farms of Holly, Colo., recalled its Rocky Ford cantaloupes Wednesday. The KDHE said Rocky Ford cantaloupes have sold in Kansas. The state has had six cases of listeriosis although the KDHE said they haven’t yet been directly linked to the outbreak. If you have melon with a Rocky Ford label, wrap it in a plastic bag and put it into a sealed trash can for disposal. The KDHE said the bacteria can grow even while the melon is refrigerated.
