OSCEOLA, Mo. – Who says, in these days of carousel conferences and recruiting scandals, that college football news has anything to do about the pigskin on the gridiron? Associated Press reports that the city aldermen of Osceola, Mo., has passed a resolution demanding that Kansas University drop its “Jayhawk” mascot. In the resolution, the southwestern Missouri town notes there was more to the “Border War” than William Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence. City officials said “jayhawk” refers to a group of Kansas terrorists who executed a dozen men on the town square and the town a smoking ruin 150 years ago. The resolution, condemns “the celebration of this murderous gang of terrorists by an institution of ‘higher education’ in such a brazen and malicious manner.” Osceola’s mayor predicted KU officials would ignore the resolution because KU is “arrogant.”
