OTTAWA — The owner of a large advertising sign that was destroyed by a severe storm will likely appeal to a special city board in an effort to rebuild all of her sign. The matter will go to the Board of Zoning Appeals for a final ruling. Ottawa city commissioners have been discussing the sign over the last couple of meetings in recent weeks. Some local business owners have criticized the city planning rules that keeps her from rebuilding the entire sign. Under city rules, the sign was grandfathered, or allowed to stay at its location in southern Ottawa. However, because more than half of the sign was destroyed by a recent severe storm, it has to meet the rules, city manager Richard Nienstedt said. However, he said he agreed to let her rebuild part of the sign, or about 60 feet of the sign. However, the owner will likely appeal, which is her right, Nienstedt said.
