OTTAWA — Nothing says fall is here more than a bowl of chili, and a chili cook-off is exactly how the United Way of Franklin County is kicking off its 2012 campaign. Three volunteer judges, including KOFO’s own Brad Howard, Bill Allegre, of Walgreen’s Pharmacy; and Barbara Netherland, long-time community volunteer, will vote on who has the best chili. The public is invited to the event and to taste all the chili entries, but tickets must be purchased before hand at the 5th and Main branch of People’s Bank. The $7 ticket will help the United Way reach its $142,000 fund-raising campaign to help support 15 area non-profits that benefit local residents. The cook off kicks off Tuesday evening at 5:30 and goes until 7. For call 785-418-2015. Four agencies are new to the United Way: Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Communities in Schools, Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County and Mid-American Nutrition. Agencies returning this year are: American Red Cross, CASA, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Franklin County Child Development Center, Hope House, Life Care Center for Women, Midland Hospice, Ottawa Wellsville Infant Toddler Center, Ottawa Teens, Inc., United Cerebral Palsy of Kansas and Willow Domestic Violence Center.
