OTTAWA — The Kansas Department of Transportation has formally awarded a Safe Routes to School grant to Ottawa. The city of Overbrook also received one of the 21 grants announced this afternoon. Ottawa will use the grant to build a network of sidewalks, including along Ash Street to the middle and high schools. Ottawa had expected to receive the grant. It’s the second of two large grants the city has just received for pedestrian and bicycle traffic This week, city commissioners awarded a bid to an Oklahoma contractor to build sidewalks and bike lanes on 15th Street between the Prairie Spirit Trail and Eisenhower Road. Work is scheduled to begin as soon as possible. Overbrook’s grant will pay the costs of developing an Safe Routes plan. Douglas County Community Health Improvement Partnership and Safe Kids Kansas also received grants to establish education programs.
