LAWRENCE — Before baseball, there was town ball. And although many purists would argue the point, Kansas University history professor Jonathan Earle thinks town ball is one of the ancestors of baseball. Abe Lincoln played town ball and some people, including Earle, still play. He’s a member of the Lawrence Town Ball League which has its own Facebook page. Earle also uses town ball to teach students about pre-Civil War American culture and how they entertained themselves. Earle will lead a discussion and demonstrate town ball Sunday afternoon at 2 at the Lawrence Public Library.
