TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the number of confirmed listeriosis cases have reached seven. That includes two people who have died in Kansas. The KDHE said the cases are linked to a multi-state outbreak of cases caused by the deadly food bacteria. Federal regulators say it appears the outbreak of listeriosis is linked to Rocky Ford cantaloupes from Jensen Farms of Colorado. Listeriosis primarily occurs among older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and newborns. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea and vomiting. Symptoms typically occur three to 70 days after eating an infected cantaloupe. However, the KDHE says if you have eaten a recalled cantaloupe, you won’t need to contact your doctor unless you have any symptoms.
