OTTAWA — Two senators representing Franklin County are among a group of area politicians seeking to set up an economic summit for southeast Kansas, including Franklin, Miami, Anderson, Linn and Coffey counties. Pat Apple and Jeff King said the southeastern counties have the highest poverty and unemployment rates and the lowest health rankings. The summit will research the regional economy to see what’s blocking growth and coming up with a long-term strategy to address the needs, they said. Hospital executive Dennis George of Ottawa will serve on a committee helping to organize the summit.
