GARNETT — A recent vote by Anderson County commissioners shows that they more confident about revenues generated by the new jail at the Anderson County law enforcement center. The Anderson County Review reported the commission’s resolution formalizes that some revenue from the new jail will go into paying for part of the jail operations. The Review noted that technically, property taxes pay for the new jail operations, and a special sales tax and property taxes pay off the bond issue for the facility. However, the county has hope that some of the jail’s daily operations and most of the bonds would be paid by housing out-of-county inmates. Although the new jail houses Anderson County inmates, the county has hoped to use extra cell space to hold prisoners from other counties at $45 per day per inmate. That has taken longer than expected because Johnson County, an expected source of inmates, built a new jail at the New Century Air Complex. The Review reported that the county has accumulated enough money to pay bonds for this year and the county’s resolution moves more revenues for jail operations.
