TOPEKA — The newest batch of highway projects announced by the Kansas Department of Transportation includes two controversial projects. The eastern leg of the South Lawrence Trafficway and a new I-35 interchange for a proposed intermodal center between Gardner and Edgerton were added to the T-Works list of projects. KDOT said it’s looking at making the new leg of the South Lawrence Trafficway between U.S. 59 and K-10 a toll road. The trafficway has been a long-running political hot-button in Douglas County because the route has been proposed to go through environmentally and culturally sensitive land. KDOT wants to build a new interchange at Homestead Lane to serve the expected truck traffic from the controversial intermodal center. KDOT said that the interchange project will be fast-tracked, with construction to start next year and be done in 2013.
