GARNETT — A 22-year-old Garnett man has died four years after he was beaten, shot and then abandoned in the Anderson County Hospital parking lot in Garnett. Theodore “Teddy” Pope II died Oct. 3 at Midland Hospice in Topeka. His funeral will be Saturday at the Richmond Community Building. He was left paralyzed from the attack. Although three men are in prison because of the attack, Anderson County Attorney Fred Campbell told the Anderson County Review it would be difficult to charge them with murder in connection with Pope’s death. Campbell said the length of time that passed between the conviction and the death makes it more difficult to prove the death was caused by the crime. However, Campbell said he will consider filing additional charges. Pope’s mother, Esther Pope, told the Review that the death certificate lists the effects of his injuries as a secondary cause of death. Eric Swanson, William Thompson and Jacob Lucas were sentenced for aggravated kidnapping and are in separate prisons. According to testimony, they attacked Pope because they believed he was a drug informant. During the beating, Swanson shot Pope and they left him in a rural area. Later, Swanson returned and took Pope to the hospital parking lot.
