BERLIN — Just when you thought it was safe to look up, the German space agency says its ROSAT X-ray space telescope will smash into the earth’s atmosphere sometime this weekend. And like a huge U.S. weather satellite that fell to earth, the Germans aren’t sure where it will hit. Because the ROSAT is nearly as large as the U.S. satellite, the Germans expect about two tons of space junk, mostly chunks of glass and ceramic, to get through and hit the earth – or someone. Scientists say there is a 1 in 2,000 chance of some of that debris ruining somebody’s weekend. Buy your lottery tickets now.
