OTTAWA — Thieves broke into a locked area at the Ottawa Co-op in the 500 block of North Locust Street and opened the valves of two anhydrous ammonia tanks late Friday night, Ottawa police said. The theft was discovered after the Ottawa Fire Department was alerted about a leak at the facility and turned off the valves. It appears only a small amount of ammonia leaked, Ottawa Fire chief Jeff Carner said. The incident remains under investigation, police said Anhydrous ammonia tanks are popular targets for methamphetamine cooks because the chemical is a key ingredient for making the drug.
