GARNETT — Last week’s frost is an early reminder to prepare home and vehicles for winter. Anderson Dounty emergency management director Marvin Grimes told the Anderson County Rview that families should take advantage of the pleasant fall days to winterize homes, prepare vehicles and create emergency kits. That includes caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows, installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic. Those with wood-burning stoves should store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood, he said. Also clear rain gutters, repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on houses. For vehicles, check anti-freeze levels, clean battery terminals, check the heater and defroster and keep fuel levels at or above half-tank. Check the winter emergency kit in each vehicle. Items should include shovel, flashlight and extra batteries, first aid kit, extra socks, blanket, tow chain or rope, booster cables, water and snack foods.
