GARNETT — Anderson County will soon have another victim witness coordinator as a result of a standoff between the county commission and County Attorney Fred Campbell. The county agreed to pay $7,500 as its 20 percent match for a grant to hire victim witness coordinator. The county had such a position for three years but it was funded by a federal grant which expired, taking the victim witness coordinator with it. Former coordinator Paris Stahl told the Anderson County Review that she worked with as many as 400 people and helped them navigate the criminal justice system. She said she held their hands through the court proceedings, helped them fill out paperwork and made sure they understood their right to seek restitution from criminals. Campbell said the coordinator helps witnesses and crime victims and performs a needed service that is hard for the county attorney’s office to do otherwise.
