TOPEKA — The Kansas Government Ethics Commission has fined Rep. Terri-Lois Gregory, R-Baldwin City, and Republican Kansas Sec. of State Kris Kobach’s political campaign organization for violations. Gregory was fined $150 for using a state-issued computer and her July legislative e-mail newsletter to request campaign contributions. During Wednesday’s hearing Gregory said it was a mistake and that she’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again. The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Kobach was defiant after the ethics commission slapped his campaign with the maximum fine of $5,000. His campaign treasurer was Rep. Tom Arpke, R-Salina. The commission said his campaign misreported $80,000 in spending and contributions to his secretary of state campaign against incumbent Chis Biggs, a Democrat, and then misrepresented how the mistake was found. Kobach said the fine shows the commission’s bias against conservative Republicans.
