OTTAWA-What began as a flue fire last night ended in $20,000 in damage this morning. The occupants at 941 E. Fairway called the fire department in the 7:00 hour last night because of a flue fire, and after a thorough investigation, firefighters didn’t find any fire spread into the attic area. This morning proved a different case, though, when the occupants noticed smoke and heat in the same area and called the fire department yet again.
“What we do not know is exactly how, or where, the fire may have breached out of the flue and got into surrounding wood trusses and burnt some of those completely through,” Ottawa Assistant Fire Chief Rick Oglesby said. “We’re going to estimate about $20,000 damage by the time you get done with all the ceiling and truss repair that will have to be done.”
Though the house damage is costly, the occupants remained unharmed.
