INMAN — Today is “Put Your Stamp on It’ – a protest effort to save the 152 Kansas post offices targeted for closure. That represents 24 percent of the post offices in Kansas, Marci Penner, of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, said. Closing the post offices will be the death blow for many of the rural communities that are struggling to survive, she said. In many cases, town residents are planning to buy thousands of stamps at the threatened post offices and contacting Congressional delegations and postal authorities today. The U.S. Postal Service says it could close 3,700 post offices across the country as a way to cut costs and reduce a budget deficit. Those in the area targeted for closure include Rantoul, Welda, Westphalia, Fontana, Centerville and Kincaid. On a related note, Penner said the Kansas Sampler’s first-round of PowerUp meetings begin next week. The PowerUp movement is about sustain rural communities by engaging and connecting young adults from 21 to 39s who live in rural areas by choice. The nearest meeting will be Monday evening at 5:30 at the LaHarpe City Hall.
