OTTAWA — Maybe he ran out of breath. A 24-year-old Paola man surrendered at the Franklin County Sheriff’s office Thursday afternoon after leading officers on a merry chase early Thursday morning. Derik Perez was booked into the Franklin County jail for reckless driving, eluding and failing to dim his headlights in connection with the chase. The sheriff’s office said a deputy tried to stop a vehicle at Jackson and Virginia roads east of Rantoul late Wednesday night. The sheriff’s office said the driver refused to stop and took off. After a long pursuit, the driver jumped out of his vehicle and ran into a wooded area and escaped.
