BALDWIN CITY — Three Douglas County communities have been awarded up to $166,000 for loans to expand or start rural businesses. Network Kansas picked Baldwin City, Eudora and Lecompton as 2011 Entrepreneurship Communities. Through Network Kansas, the state awards tax credits to the communities, which in turn sell the credits to get the cash needed to fund the loan program. Eudora council member John Fiore told the Lawrence Journal-World that the loan program is designed to help those businesses that need a little capital to expand or offer a new product, or to those entrepreneurs who need a last bit of capital to start their businesses. As businesses repay the loans, the money will be put back into the program and loaned again, he said.
