DUNDEE, Ga. — One of the last surviving actors who played Munchkins in that 1939 classic movie “The Wizard of Oz,” has died. The Associated Press reported the 4-foot-5 Karl Slover died at 93 in a central Georgia hospital. Only three people remain of the 124 diminutive actors who played the munchkins in “The Wizard of Oz,” AP said. Slover is the first of the three trumpeters to herald the Munchkin mayor when he makes his entrance to Dorothy, played by Judy Barland. He was a member of the vaudeville group known as the Singer Midgets, who appeared in circuses and on the stage. The group became the nucleus of the Munchkins for the movie. The AP said that unlike many of the actors, Slover loved being remembered as a Munchkin and made a career out of it, appearing at Oz-related events as late as last weekend.
