WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $5.6 million to Texas for planning and environmental work to develop the Oklahoma City-South Texas Rail Corridor. Transportation secretary Ray LaHood said the grant will be used to improve passenger rail service will connect Oklahoma City, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and South Texas, which are some of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the U.S. Earlier this year, LaHood announced a similar planning grant for high-speed rail service between Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston. Kansas has been working on connecting passenger rail service from Texas, through Oklahoma City to Amtrak’s Chicago-Los Angeles route at Newton.
