TOPEKA — Kansas will collect a fee on the purchase of all prepaid wireless phones and phone cards beginning Jan. 1. The Kansas Department of Revenue said the Prepaid Wireless 911 fee is 1.06 percent of the retail cost of the phone or phone card and will be handled like an additional sales tax. Legislators approved the new tax last session. The money will go into the state’s 911 Fund and will help Kansas communities develop or improve their emergency dispatch centers.
