OTTAWA — If you drive for Thanksgiving, be sure your holiday turkey isn’t a ticket. Watch your driving this week. Ottawa police and several other police departments and agencies will be, too. Ottawa Lt. Adam Weingartner said that Ottawa is among those departments taking part in the STEP Thanksgiving traffic enforcement campaign going on through Sunday night. The Kansas Department of Transportation will reimburse departments grants to cover the overtime costs for the stepped-up traffic enforcement. Officers will be particularly interested in impaired drivers and those who aren’t wearing seatbelts for child restraints. The Thanksgiving holiday weekend traditionally outranks all other holidays in the number of alcohol-related crashes, he said.
