TOPEKA–Holiday decorations, especially candles and electrical lighting, can be a fire hazard. Safe Kids Kansas has issued some safety guidelines, such as never leave burning candles unattended. They urge battery-operated flameless candles since they are not a fire hazard. Never leave a tree or other decorative lighting unattended. Check for any frayed wires. Keep alcohol (including baking extracts) out of reach and don’t leave alcoholic drinks unattended. Holly berries, mistletoe berries, poinsettias, amaryllis, boxwood, Christmas rose, Crown of Thorns, English Ivy and Jerusalem cherry are all poisonous.
