PEARL HARBOR — “News bulletin. The Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, by air, President Roosevelt has just announced. The attack also was made on all naval and military activities on the principle island of O’ahu.” That was the dramatic announcement by radio newsman John Charles Daly 70 years ago today making the historic broadcast of the attack, called by Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt “a day in infamy,” that brought the U.S. into World War II. There were a variety of observances today, including the few remaining veterans who survived the attack on Hawaii, which killed 2,400 Americans.
