LAWRENCE – Islamic parties made the biggest gains in the recent Egyptian elections. The biggest winner was the Muslim Brotherhood’s party. Kansas University Middle East and international law expert Raj Bhala says Americans shouldn’t panic that a key ally is about to go off the deep end because of overheated rhetoric about Islamic parties. Despite its past record of attacks on the Egyptian government, Bhala says the Muslim Brotherhood is a moderate Islamic party and the U.S. should recognize that. By failing to reach out to the party, the U.S. runs the risk of driving the Muslim Brotherhood into the arms of more radical Islamic parties that also polled well in the elections, he said. Bhala, who was featured on last week’s Community Perspective, will talk about the most recent events in the Middle East for this Sunday morning’s Community Perspective at 8:04.
