ANSAS CITY — A group building a memorial for the victims of the collapse of skywalks at the Hyatt Regency Hotel at Kansas City 30 years ago is angry because the Hyatt Hotels Corporation won’t contribute to the memorial.  The Kansas City Star reported that former Hyatt Regency Crown Center general manager Rusty Macy said the company won’t donate because the hotel is now a Sheraton and Hyatt has left Kansas City.  The Sheraton took over the hotel earlier this year.  The Star reported the announcement of the change in management was delayed until after the 30-year anniversary of the tragedy in July.  Skywalk Foundation board president Frank Freeman said the group is stunned and shocked that the Hyatt left town without any kind of donation nor saying a word about the memorial.  He said he now believes Hyatt never intended to make a contribution despite its words of support.  The foundation is raising about a quarter of a million dollars for the memorial, which will be east of the hotel in Hospital Hill Park.  The hotel skywalks collapsed on July 17, 1981, during a dance, killing 114 people.
