AMARILLO, Texas — During this week’s monster blizzard that blasted much of Kansas and dumped buckets of cold rain on Franklin County, a Texas family was trapped in their SUV under four feet of snow in New Mexico on Monday. David Higgins, his wife and daughter were entombed in snow for 40 hours, surviving on sandwiches and bottled water. Higgins told ABC News that his family knew they were running out of time. “We were short of breath and we didn’t realize it at the time but we were actually running out of air,” he said. Nearly 40 hours after their ordeal began, help finally arrived. A team of rescuers dug their way down and pulled the Higginses to safety. “Not just straight out the window,” he said. “It was out the window and up, like out of a rabbit hole.” New Mexico is getting hammered by a second blizzard today. This winter storm has dumped another 6 to 14 inches of snow over much of New Mexico – closing roads and isolating Albuquerque, except by air.
