GARNETT — Although the National Traffic Safety Board recommends that states ban the non-emergency use of cell phones while driving, area lawmakers tell the Anderson County Review that it’s unlikely there will be a ban in Kansas this year. Although the legislature banned texting while driving last year, legislators said the ban probably won’t be expanded this year. The present laws against inattentive driving will cover cell-phone use, Sen. Pat Apple, R-Louisburg, said. Because Kansas is a rural state that requires people to drive more distances, using a cell phone while driving is useful, he said. Representatives Bill Feuerborn, D-Garnett, and Bill Otto, R-LeRoy, said a wider ban has little chance of success and that such a proposal probably wouldn’t even get out of committee for a final vote.
