KANSAS CITY — Five suburban Missouri school districts have filed a lawsuit to halt student transfers from the troubled Kansas City public schools. School districts in Blue Springs, Independence, Lee’s Summit, North Kansas City and Raytown say they are willing to accept students but want to resolve issues of transportation, tuition and eligibility. Kansas City schools lose their state accreditation Jan. 1, which allows parents to transfer students. However, the Kansas City Star reported that the Kansas City school board says it’s up to other school districts to provide transportation for transfer students and say the district will pay tuition on its own terms. The five districts say that’s not the state law and that they set transportation and tuition costs to be paid by Kansas City. They also say that limits set by the Kansas City board on who can transfer are also illegal.
