PAOLA — Paola veterinarian Greg Windler is retiring after 36 years working in Miami County. Windler had scaled back his time, working part-time the past couple of years at Miami Veterinary Clinic, but will retire full-time at the end of the year. Windler told the Miami County Republic he’ll never forget doing emergency surgery to save an adopted stray dog that had a tranquilizer dart lodged near its heart or freeing a bull that had its horns trapped in a feeder. He said he has treated animals of all shapes and sizes, including the usual pets and rural animals, and even camels, even a few snakes and lizards. When he began in 1975 with veterinarians Art Godfrey and John Gangel, the business covered most of the county, including large farm animals. The Paola clinic now treats mostly smaller pets. A reception for Windler is this afternoon from 2 to 5 at the Miami Veterinary Clinic in Paola.
