OLATHE — Commuters heading to Kansas City are seeing a new sight. This week, Johnson County Transit busses started driving on the right-hand shoulder along I-35 as a restricted express lane. Busses will use the shoulder when traffic is moving slowly or not at all. If a bus driver encounters a stalled car or other obstruction on the shoulder, busses will merge back into traffic and move back onto the shoulder when they get around it. The “Bus on Shoulder” started nearly 20 years ago in Minnesota. Since then, Chicago, Miami-Dade County, San Diego and Washington, D.C., have adopted the practice. The Johnson County Transit said it’s also adding more bus stops and park and ride locations along I-35, including Gardner and the Great Mall of the Great Plains.
